Free Pattern ยท Crochet Bandanas
This triangular bandana is designed as a light handmade accessory rather than a heavy winter scarf. It starts at the center point and grows outward, so you can stop when the triangle fits your hair, neckline, or styling preference. The sample sizing below gives a small adult kerchief shape, but the construction is easy to adjust.
Materials
- DK cotton or cotton-bamboo yarn, about 90 to 130 yards
- 4 mm crochet hook, or hook needed for a soft fabric
- Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers
Gauge and size
Gauge is flexible for this accessory. Aim for a fabric that drapes instead of standing stiff. A useful guide is 16 double crochet stitches and 8 rows over 4 inches after light blocking. The finished triangle measures about 17 inches across the top edge and 8 inches from center top to point before ties.
Abbreviations
ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, st = stitch, sp = space, rep = repeat.
Construction
Ch 4 and join to form a ring. Row 1: ch 3, work 3 dc into the ring, ch 2, work 4 dc into the ring, turn. Row 2: ch 3, dc in same st, dc across to corner ch-2 sp, work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the corner, dc across, work 2 dc in last st, turn. Repeat Row 2 until the triangle reaches your preferred width. For a cleaner boutique edge, work one row of sc along both angled sides and the top edge.
Ties and fit
At each top corner, join yarn and chain 16 to 22 inches depending on how you like to tie it. Slip stitch back along the chain for a firmer cord, then fasten off. Shorter ties feel neater under hair; longer ties can wrap once around a ponytail. Block the bandana flat, shaping the point gently without stretching the top edge.
Style it with linen shirts, simple tanks, or a low bun. For a softer look, use muted blush or sand. For a sharper fashion finish, use black cotton and keep the border very clean.
