Free Pattern ยท Seasonal Handmade Style

This slim crochet neck tie is a seasonal accessory that changes character with yarn and color. In cotton, it reads like a summer styling piece. In a soft wool blend, it becomes a light fall layer. The construction is narrow, beginner-friendly, and easy to lengthen, making it a good project for using one special skein.

Materials

  • Sport or DK yarn, 120 to 180 yards
  • 4 mm hook
  • Tapestry needle and blocking pins

Measurements and gauge

The sample measures about 3.25 inches wide and 44 inches long after blocking. Gauge is about 18 stitches over 4 inches in the main stitch pattern. Because this accessory is tied loosely, fit is flexible. Make it shorter for a bow tie style or longer for a soft drape.

Abbreviations

ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, st = stitch, sp = space.

Pattern

Ch 18. Row 1: dc in fourth ch from hook and each ch across, turn. Row 2: ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st across, turn. Row 3: ch 3, dc in each sc and ch-1 sp across, turn. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the tie reaches 42 to 48 inches, ending after a dc row.

Shaped ends

For a soft tapered end, work one decrease row at each end after the main rectangle is complete. Join yarn at a short edge, ch 1, sc across while skipping the second and second-to-last stitches. Fasten off. Repeat on the other end. This creates a subtle narrowing without changing the whole pattern.

Finishing and styling

Work one round of sc around the entire piece, placing 2 sc in each corner. Block the tie flat and pull gently lengthwise. For summer, choose warm white, muted blush, or olive cotton. For fall, use black, camel, or sand. Wear it tied once at the neck, wrapped around a bag handle, or knotted over a simple tee.
