Technique Tutorial ยท Bag Making
Bag straps are often the first place a crochet accessory starts to look handmade in the wrong way. The body can be beautiful, but if the strap stretches, twists, or pulls at the corners, the whole project feels unfinished. This tutorial gives practical finishing methods for cleaner straps without claiming they make a crochet bag suitable for carrying heavy loads.
Choose the right strap style
For a soft shoulder bag, a flat single crochet strap is usually enough. For a market tote, a thicker strap worked into the top band is better because it spreads tension. For a small wristlet, a chain loop reinforced with single crochet is simple and neat. Avoid very open lace straps unless the bag is purely decorative.
Reduce stretch
Cotton stretches less than acrylic, but all crochet straps can grow with wear. Use a smaller hook than the bag body, work tight stitches, and consider slip stitching along both long edges after the strap is complete. This edge row compresses the stitches and gives a more tailored finish.
Join securely
If the strap is sewn on, place it inside the bag at least one inch below the top edge. Sew a square, then sew an X through the square. This distributes pulling across more fabric. If the strap is crocheted as part of the top band, work several extra rounds over the chain so the strap becomes part of the bag rather than a separate loop.
Keep symmetry visible
Mark strap placement before attaching anything. Count stitches from each side seam and use removable markers. Try the empty bag on your shoulder and check that the opening sits evenly. A strap that is one inch off center can make a small bag tilt.
Finishing checklist
- Weave strap tails in more than one direction.
- Steam lightly only if the yarn label allows it.
- Line the bag if the strap attachment pulls at the fabric.
- Test the empty bag before adding personal items.
A polished strap should look intentional from the front, the side, and the inside. The extra finishing time is small, but it changes the project from a craft sample into a wearable accessory.
