Free Pattern ยท Crochet Bags
A small shoulder bag is one of the most useful wearable crochet projects because it can be styled like a boutique accessory while staying simple to make. This version is built from two dense panels, joined around the sides, with a strap that can be shortened for a baguette shape or lengthened for a crossbody fit.
Materials
- Worsted cotton or cotton blend yarn, 180 to 230 yards
- 4.5 mm crochet hook
- Two stitch markers, tapestry needle, optional magnetic snap
Measurements and gauge
The finished body measures about 8.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches tall. Gauge is about 15 single crochet stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches. For a firmer bag, choose a smaller hook; for a softer slouch, use a cotton blend and keep the stitch tension relaxed.
Abbreviations
ch = chain, sc = single crochet, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, rep = repeat.
Panels
Make two panels. Ch 34. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. Row 2: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Repeat Row 2 until the panel measures 6.5 inches tall. Fasten off the first panel. For the second panel, do not fasten off if you want to continue directly into joining.
Joining
Hold the wrong sides together. Work sc through both layers down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side. Leave the top open. Work one round of sc around the top opening to stabilize it. If you want a flap, continue on the back panel only for 12 to 16 rows, then add one round of sc around the flap edge.
Strap
For a shoulder strap, ch 80 to 95. For a crossbody strap, ch 120 to 145. Sc in each chain, attach to the opposite side, then work 2 more rows of sc along the strap. Sew the strap ends to the inside top corners with several passes of yarn. Try the strap on before weaving in ends because strap length changes the look dramatically.
Add lining if you will carry makeup, pens, or small items. The crochet shell is decorative and practical, but lining helps the bag keep a refined shape.
