Free Pattern ยท Beginner Wearables
A wristlet is a satisfying beginner wearable because it is small, useful, and easy to personalize. This version uses single crochet for a dense fabric, a folded rectangle for the body, and a simple loop strap. It can hold small items, but it should be lined if you plan to carry coins, makeup, or keys every day.
Materials
- Worsted cotton yarn, about 120 yards
- 4.5 mm hook
- Tapestry needle, zipper or button if desired, stitch markers
Gauge and finished size
Gauge is about 15 single crochet stitches over 4 inches. The finished pouch measures approximately 7 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall when folded. To make it taller, add more rows before folding. To make it wider, increase the starting chain in multiples of two.
Abbreviations
ch = chain, sc = single crochet, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch.
Body
Ch 30. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. Row 2: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Repeat Row 2 until the rectangle measures about 10 inches long. Fold the rectangle so the lower section forms a pouch about 4.5 inches tall and the remaining flap folds over the front.
Joining
With the sides aligned, work sc through both layers up one side of the pouch. Fasten off, then repeat on the other side. If you want a soft rounded corner, place 2 sc in each bottom corner before working up the side. Sew a button to the front and make a small chain loop on the flap, or sew in a zipper by hand.
Wrist strap
Join yarn at one side seam. Ch 38 to 44, depending on wrist size, then sl st back into the same seam point to form a loop. Work sc around the chain loop if you want a thicker strap. Weave the tail through the seam several times so the handle is secure.
Block lightly by pressing the pouch flat under a towel. This makes the edges look intentional and helps the flap sit smoothly.
