Free Pattern ยท Summer Accessories
This simple mesh pouch is a small accessory project that works inside a market tote, on a beach day, or as a lightweight handmade sleeve for sunglasses. It is not meant for heavy objects or sharp items, but it is excellent for organizing small soft goods. The open stitch pattern keeps it breathable and quick to make.
Materials
- DK cotton yarn, 70 to 100 yards
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle, stitch marker, optional drawstring cord
Finished measurements
The sample pouch measures about 4.5 inches wide and 7 inches tall when flat. To make it wider, start with a longer foundation chain. To make it taller, continue the mesh rounds before adding the top edge. Gauge is flexible, but the mesh should not be so loose that items fall through.
Abbreviations
ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, sp = space.
Base
Ch 24. Round 1: sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, work 3 sc in last ch, continue down the opposite side, work 2 sc in final ch, join. Round 2: ch 1, sc around, placing 3 sc at both short ends. This oval base gives the pouch a neat bottom without sewing.
Mesh body
Round 1: ch 4, skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st around, join to third chain. Repeat until the pouch is about 6.25 inches tall. Keep your joins loose so the top does not pull inward.
Top edge and drawstring
Work 2 rounds of sc around the top. For a drawstring round, work ch 3, skip 1 st, sc in next st around, then finish with one final sc round. Make a chain cord about 18 inches long and weave it through the drawstring openings. Knot the ends.
For a more refined finish, use the same yarn for the cord and keep the knot small. For a beach-style accessory, use contrast cord in black or olive. Block the pouch flat before use so the mesh opens evenly.
